Losing to emotion, not to analysis

Beginners rarely lose because they cannot read a chart. More often they lose because of decisions made while emotion runs high. Four patterns show up most.

  • FOMO. Price has already run, and you jump in because you fear missing out. You buy near the top, and your stop-loss ends up too wide or missing altogether.
  • Panic. A small loss gets closed at once, while a winning position is left until it reverses. Your average loss ends up bigger than your average win.
  • Revenge trading. After a loss, you open a larger position to "get it back". Position size goes up exactly when your judgment is at its worst.
  • Overtrading. Boredom or a craving for action pushes you in without a setup. Every trade carries a cost, so high frequency without an edge only adds cost.

The cure is not "be more disciplined". It is a written rule set before you open a position: when to enter, where to stop, and how big. Levels 4 and 5 go deeper.

Market hours: when it is busy, when it misleads

The forex market is open 24 hours on weekdays, but trading piles up in certain sessions. When it is busy, spreads are tighter and price moves more orderly. When it is quiet, spreads widen and moves are often random.

SessionSummer (WIB)Winter (WIB)
London14.00 - 23.0015.00 - 00.00
New York19.00 - 04.0020.00 - 05.00
London and New York overlap19.00 - 23.0020.00 - 00.00

The hours shift because Europe and the United States move their clocks forward in summer, and the changes do not land in the same week. For a few weeks in March and in October or November, the gap can differ by an hour from the table. Check your broker's schedule for exact times.

Crypto is different. Crypto exchanges are open 24 hours a day all week, weekends included. The market still has busy hours, but it never closes. That means an open position keeps moving while you sleep, so stop-losses and position size matter even more.

Pip, lot, and leverage: the basic vocabulary

These three terms appear in every risk calculation.

  • Pip is the smallest commonly used unit of price movement. On most currency pairs, 1 pip is 0.0001. On pairs that include the yen (JPY), 1 pip is 0.01.
  • Lot is position size. 1 standard lot equals 100,000 units of the base currency.
  • Leverage lets you open a position larger than your capital. The capital held back as collateral is called margin.
SizeUnitsValue of 1 pip (EUR/USD)
1.00 lot100,00010 USD
0.10 lot10,0001 USD
0.01 lot1,0000.10 USD

A pip value of 10 USD per lot applies to USD-quoted pairs such as EUR/USD. On other pairs the value moves with the exchange rate.

Capital of 100 USD, a 10,000 USD position, 20 USD of margin at 1:500 leverage. Price moves 1% against you = a 100 USD loss, your entire capital. An illustration. Leverage does not change the percentage price moves, but it changes how hard they hit your capital.

Free signals and how to read them

Signal groups live on attention, and often on broker commission. That is not automatically bad, but you need to know their incentives. These five questions help you judge.

  • Who carries the loss? Almost always you, not the group admin.
  • Can the record be verified by a third party, for example through FxBlue or Myfxbook, rather than just screenshots?
  • Are losses shown too, or only the winning trades?
  • Are you steered to a particular broker, and what does the admin earn from it?
  • Is there a promise of guaranteed results? If so, walk away.

TradeHub is also an Introducing Broker and earns commission from your volume. That is why we explain our income on the What is a rebate page, and why we do not insert paid courses or mentoring inside Trade Academy.

Three routes, one foundation

Forex & CFD, crypto, and prop firms differ in costs and rules, but the foundation is the same: emotions to manage, position size to calculate, and costs to understand.

If you are new, pick one route first and learn it through. Opening three at once only multiplies what you have to watch. Level 2 covers the costs of all three.

Summary

  • Beginner losses come more from emotion (FOMO, panic, revenge trading, overtrading) than from analysis.
  • The London and New York sessions are busiest. The hours shift an hour between summer and winter. Crypto never closes.
  • Work out risk with pips, lots, and margin. Leverage magnifies the impact of price moves on your capital.
  • Judge free signals by who carries the loss, whether the record is verified, and what the admin earns.
